Mother’s Day Bunnies

I haven’t been able to share some of my best photos recently, because they’re being used for different things, and some of my friends on Facebook and Flickr might not need to see them yet. This is one set I think I can let loose now that it’s close to Mother’s Day, and there’s not much chance of the Moms stumbling across this between now and Sunday. My wife is a Girl Scouts leader, and, at their meeting a couple of weeks ago, they made Mother’s Day cards. We set up a photo booth, and I took a portrait of each of them to include with their card. I used the bunny ears for each one, just as way to loosen them up before taking a more “normal” shot. Some of those came out pretty good, but when I started editing the set, I really came to love the bunnies, especially after processing them all B&W.

Cassandra

Cassandra

I used to do a project called 100 Strangers; I haven’t really worked on it in a while, but Cassandra would be my 45th, and I did shoot this with that project in mind. I liked the idea a lot, which was to approach 100 different people, find out a little something about them, take their portrait, and post it. The aim was to get more comfortable with myself as a photographer and storyteller, and to get better at approaching people.

When I first started it, I was pretty prolific, but I soon slowed WAY down. I was unhappy with the photos, and I wasn’t really sticking to the project script – I often spent more time talking about myself, and about the project itself, than finding out about the people.

Later, I found myself photographing lots of strangers, from models to friends of friends, whatever, that didn’t really fit the project. Plus, I’m a fan of street photography, where you generally shoot people without their permission, which often results in a more relaxed, more revealing pose. I finally just let the 100 Strangers project slide…

So, I’m repurposing the whole thing into a personal project – Some Strangers – instead of the more structured one. I plan to keep shooting strangers going forward, but I’m not aiming for a fixed number, just good shots. I might include some folks who don’t know I’m there, as well…

Lines and Triangles and Squares, Oh My!

Capturing and collecting these images is itself an attempt to mimic what the people who created the shapes and lines that are documented have done; it is an attempt to impose order and pattern on a chaotic universe. I’ve been thinking some about sets of photos lately – I get caught up so often viewing individual photos and how they work by themselves, but when I study other photographers, many of my favorites are best appreciated in context as part of a body of work, or a collection of photos united by theme. So, here’s one effort to put a related set of my own work together – I’d love to know what you think:

Visited my Mom last weekend and got some decent shots just hanging out and having a movie day while it rained…
